Pathophysiology!
Jell'o Everyone!!!!
I am almost done with Patho! It has definitely been a ride for me. I knew that this would be a tough course and that I would have to really think like a nursing student and I couldn't have been more correct. Let me start off my saying .... I LOVED patho! It was a subject that I enjoyed .... Well it's a subject I enjoy (I still have a week left). To learn about what is happening in the body when someone has asthma, diabetes or COPD is AWESOME! I mean it's not awesome to see anyone with any of those but it's good to feel productive. To be able to know what is happening or has happened in the body is very friggin cool in my book. I enjoy these things. I find all of this very interesting. Our bodies are so complex. It's very cool to see how one thing can affect something else. To see how things tie in with others. There's so much to learn but I'm definitely on my way. I'M A NURSING STUDENT!!!! I have to keep reminding myself of that. It gets tough but this is what I love!
Ok so let's talk about the course and a little less about my love for the knowledge lol. What did I do to get through this course successfully? Guys and gals nursing school is not going to be a piece of cake. It takes a lot and I mean A LOT of studying and dedication. You will have to see your friends or significant others less. If they want you to succeed they will understand. Some people won't understand and that is also ok. You have to come to terms with that. It's ok to be solo for some time while you work on you. Huge parenthesis there, now back to the question. What did I do to get through the course successfully? First of all read through your syllabus. Find out what the course work load looks like. I soon realized that it was going to be a lot of material. I spoke to the professor and asked for their insight. What was something that former students said worked for them? Keeping in mind that it doesn't mean it would work for u. I decided that I would print out the power points and take notes in class lectures. I then would go back and read the textbook. Lecture is limited and meant to give you an outline, not to teach you all of the concepts. Always go back and read your books. We were privileged to have recorded lectures as well. I would watch those and make sure I understood the material. If I had any questions, chances are reading the book or watching the recorded lectures would answer it before I even made it back to lecture. Don't hesitate to reach out to your professor. They are there to teach you these concepts .... Use them as a resource! We also have workshops. They were mainly reviewing the material we went over in class and I would attend them all. I keep exposing myself to the material over and over in different ways. The process takes time!!! If you do all that you will be successful. You might not have to do it all but I couldn't feel comfortable if I didn't give it my all before walking into an exam. I wanted to make sure I did all I could. Sure, C's get degrees but in nursing school you don't want to get C's if you can help it. I promise you. These are lives you're dealing with. I wouldn't want a nurse with straight C's taking care of me. Just sayin.
There are also great youtube videos that can help you if you don't quite understand the concepts. These are just a few that I've skimmed but can for sure help put it in perspective. Armando Hasudungan / Handwritten Tutorials / KhanAcademy.org or google Khan Academy pathophysiology. Hope that helps!
